Jay Navarrette – A Magic Biography
I can remember the first trick I saw which really amazed me. I was seven years old and my father did the Chinese Linking Rings for my birthday party. My father just did a couple of tricks for family and friends but to me, at that age, he was the greatest magician alive. Although my father would hide the few tricks he had, when he was not around, I knew exactly where he hid them and I would go through them and learn them. My father knew I was getting into his magic tricks, but he gave it all to me when I showed him my version of the Chinese Linking Rings. Although it was a very simple version of the Rings for a seven year old, it brought a smile to my family’s face. And so started my journey into magic some 40 years ago.
As a child and throughout my teenage years I continued to pursue my interest in magic. I would perform for schools, libraries, charity events and private parties. At the age of 18 I entered the military and continued to perform magic for our military service men, women and their families. I performed for many children’s shows while overseas. Although, I had less time to devote to magic during my time in the service, I still had a great love for it.
I married and my wife and I had one son. I enjoyed performing for him as a child, but as he grew up into an adult, his interest in seeing magic seemed to diminish. So I started to leave magic behind. In about 1995, I stopped doing magic altogether and pursued other interests.
In 2008, my granddaughter turned five years old and I showed her a simple coin trick. I saw the amazement in her eyes that I used to see in the eyes of the children I had previously performed for. She said, “Grandpa, show me another trick!” That sparked my magical interest again, and her and her brothers became my captive audience. Since then, I have pulled the old trunk of magic tricks from the attic and started to develop a show. I recently performed for some private parties and hope to continue to grow in my performance level. At my age now, I feel as I did when I was kid learning the Chinese Linking Rings. I think magic is eternal and will stay with me forever.
